Limited Edition 16 x 20 Print Of The Sands Casino Implosion
The Sands Hotel and
Casino in Atlantic City October 18, 2007 marked the end of
an era in Atlantic City’s gambling history. The Sands Hotel
and Casino was imploded to make way for The Pinnacle; the
next generation in gaming in Atlantic City.
The Sands (August
1980 to Nov. 11, 2007) was the first casino in
Atlantic City to be built from the ground up.
Previous properties had been fitted around existing
structures.
Though it was the smallest of the casinos in
Atlantic City,
it had a loyal following. Part of the loyalty sprang from
the variety of megastars that graced the stages of the
property. The likes of Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Cher,
Robin Williams, Gloria Estefan and Eddie Murphy entertained
for over 26 years.
The property, originally know as the Brighton Hotel and
Casino, consisted of a 21 story, 500 room hotel with over
57,000 square feet of casino, restaurants and shopping
space. The “people mover” opened in the late 90’s brought
customers straight from the Boardwalk to the Sands on a
horizontal escalator. The building was the first casino
imploded on the East Coast. The implosion only lasted a few
seconds, but it was preceded by a magnificent fireworks and
laser show that dazzled the thousands who came to watch a
piece of Atlantic City history crumble beneath a cloud of
dust.
Prior to the implosion, the Sands Casino sold off much of the
interior fixtures. The response from the community was
overwhelming with former loyal customers buying everything
from shot glasses to poker tables.
